    In a recent op-ed article for Chief of Staff Asia, Sheralynn Tjioe, Head of Interim Solutions – Technology, delves into the evolving dynamics of the technology employment landscape, highlighting the increasing prominence and value of interim roles in the sector. 

    With her extensive experience as an executive recruiter, Sheralynn provides a compelling perspective on the shift towards project-based and fixed-term employment within the technology industry.

     “The move towards project-based or fixed-term work is not just a passing trend; it reflects significant transformations within the industry, driven by the pace of technological progression,” Sheralynn notes.

    Instability Motivates Shift in Career Strategies

    The recent instability at leading technology companies has further accelerated this shift, prompting many senior executives to reconsider their career strategies.

    Sheralynn observes this growing inclination towards interim work: “This shift has prompted many senior executives to rethink their career strategies, increasingly turning to contract roles as both a safeguard and a proactive way to stay relevant in an inconstant industry,” she writes.

    One of the key attractions of interim work, according to Sheralynn’s candidates, is the flexibility it offers. Professionals can choose from a variety of assignments with different tenures, thereby broadening their skill sets and gaining exposure to diverse industries and organisational cultures.

    This flexibility, coupled with well-defined mandates, allows for a clear focus on delivery. She adds, “Candidates have also shared that burnout and work-related stress seem to be less prevalent in their interim roles, thanks to a predefined endpoint they can work towards.”

    The Qualities of a Strong Interim Candidate

    In the op-ed, Sheralynn also highlights the distinct qualities that make an ideal interim candidate. Unlike full-time hires, interim roles demand agility, a proven track record of delivering value quickly, and the ability to lead change initiatives or resolve urgent technical issues. “The distinctions between the ideal full-time candidate and the ideal interim candidate are pronounced,” she writes.

    Effective communication and self-management are crucial skills for interim professionals, who must navigate professional uncertainty and market themselves effectively for future opportunities. Sheralynn emphasises: “Contracting professionals must be able to communicate technical goals, project expectations, and constructive feedback clearly and effectively to all organisational levels.”
